It’s a new day for The Milwaukees.New album, too, for the Jersey City band, which celebrates the release of “American Anthems Vol. 1″ with a show 9 p.m. Saturday at Maxwell’s in Hoboken.
“We wanted to get down to songwriting and melody,” said guitarist Jeff Nordstedt of the new work. “We found ourselves lumped in with the visceral energy type of bands who play disposable music and we wanted more long-lasting, durable songs.”
“American Anthems” has a broad sweep and a big rock sound, but it certainly doesn’t sacrifice heart or soul for its bigness. It’s a statement of growth from The Milwaukees, who have been been around for 10 years or so. The band — also Dylan St. Clark, vocals; Patrick Fusco, drums; and Donovan Cain — used to have a strong presence in New Brunswick that included lots of shows at the former Budapest Cocktail Lounge.
“When we started out we were 21, and we just wanted to play everything all the time, and we ended up being pretty noisy,” Nordstedt said. “This time there’s a big push to play less. We grew up and now we’re more about songwriting.” –Chris Jordan, The Home News Tribune
