NYC Venues

OK, so Gothamist wrote a piece about our squabble with the Annex following Friday’s cancellation without notice.

In the peice we got as good as we gave. And that is fine. We’re big boys, we can take it.

Just want to be clear about one thing: we don’t hate New York or New Yorkers. As a matter of fact, the reason I was even moved to raise a stink is because I am sort of tired of the number of bad stories I’ve heard from other bands about playing in NYC. I just wish that there were more clubs that would treat bands well.

Our last NYC gig was at Club Midway. They treated us well and we appreciated it. We used to play the Lit Lounge a lot, and they treated us well too. But anyone who has been in a band and toured around knows that there are a lot of places in NYC are just hustling and you have to keep your guard up. I have heard more stories about that going on in NYC than any other city.

Is it possible that there are more instances of shady clubs in New York simply because there is more of everything in New York. Yes, very possible. It just bums me out sometimes that the greatest city in the world is a few miles from our practice space and its reputation for rock venues is far from the greatest in the world.

So someone who writes for Gothamist doesn’t like our music or our photos (we don’t like a lot of our photos either for what it is worth). That’s cool. Taste is subjective. It makes the world go round.

I stand by the fact that lots of New York clubs don’t treat bands very well, and I think it is a shame because NYC is the best city in the world.

The Annex in NYC

OK, so we got screwed by the Annex in NYC last night. They canceled our show without letting us know. One band even drove all the way from Boston only to be told to turn around and go home.

So here is what we are doing. I’m trying to email every major blogger, journalist and scenester in the NYC area to let them know how badly this club treats bands and encourage everyone to avoid playing there and to avoid seeing shows there.

Below is the message I sent to Gothamist, Oh My Rockness, Brooklyn Vegan, and Jersey Beat. Please feel free to edit and forward something like this to anyone you know who can publish something anywhere.

Also of note: a friend and fan sent an angry email to the club last night and cc’d me. I am attaching his reply below. Remarkably, he did not even apologize. His email address is theannexnyc@yahoo.com. Feel free to email him and tell him what you think of his club.

LETTER TO BLOGGERS:
Not sure if this is something that you’ll be interested in or not, but we had a really bad experience at the rock club, the Annex, on Orchard St. last night. Basically we showed up for a 5:00 load in to find out that our show had been cancelled. The two other bands on the bill faced the same problem. One of the bands had driven 5 hours through the rain from Boston just for this show, only to find out that it had been canceled. None of the bands had been called.

No one in the club had any answers or solutions. No managers seemed to be available to answer any questions. The booker was not there and was not answering her phone. The people left at the club were clueless and disinterested in our problem.

I can honestly say that we have played hundreds of shows. We have toured in 30+ states and 8 different counties and we have NEVER encountered such bad treatment. Almost everywhere we go in the world, New York has a reputation for being a terrible place to play. We have played a few clubs in New York that know how to treat a band. The vast majority are disinterested and disorganized. However, this experience at the Annex is a new low.

Since no one at the club seemed to care about how badly they had treated the bands, I figured my best recourse would be to spread the word to influential blogs in hopes of letting people know to stay away from this club.

RESPONSE FROM OWNER:
Hello-

I own the annex. Our booker was told a week ago to
postpone your show. My main focus is on putting on
the best possible entertainment I can. The band
playing the Ruff Club needed extra time to prepare for
their set on friday night, and I personally decided
they were a priority.

Thanks,

jason

Can Doctors please stop commenting on Britney?!

What’s with doctors who have never met Britney Spears commenting on her condition? I’m hardly going to get all “Leave Britney Alone” on your ass, but I do expect more from a doctor. Hippocratic Oath anyone? Don’t doctor’s make enough money without needing to become celebrities? Well, I guess everyone wants to be rich and famous.

In honor of this situation, I am giving away an MP3 of our new tune “Rich and Famous” to readers of this blog.

Rich and Famous

Enjoy!
