Thursday Nights at Majestic
OK, we’ll be honest with you, Thursday Nights at Bar Majestic evolved kind of selfishly. We had some new tunes we wanted to try out and, since we were in writing/recording mode, we also needed a little extra scratch to pay the rent on our rehearsal space. So when our new best friend, Kris, top banana over at Majestic, invited us to set up and play there, we were all in. The first night went well and we were hooked.
We were a little concerned about playing once a month in the same town. So when we decided to make it a regular monthly occurrence we sat down and talked about how to make it something different that our usual gigs. So we set up a few rules:
For starters, we play on stripped down gear at lower volume than usual. Dylan plays acoustic all night. No big amps. Pat has the weirdest little drum kit you’ve ever seen. No pomp, no circumstance. And as musicians, there is no where for us to hide. Either we play well or we don’t. No crushing distortion to mask the warts.
Two sets. The Milwaukees have always been notorious for “wham-bam-thank-you-mam” sets. 40 minutes and out. Leave them wanting more. Well, at Majestic, it is just us with 2 hours to fill. We’ve got to work to keep your attention for two hours. It is a very different style of performance that we are used to.
We’re hosting a party, not just playing a show. We play right on the floor with the audience. There is no stage. No back room to hide in. We shoot the shit with the audience during the sets, hang out between sets, and drink with everyone after we’re done.
Covers and requests. Two things we pretty much never do at real shows. But on Thursday nights the rules don’t apply. So usually whip out a few covers. We’ve covered the Faces, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and even Wings. If there is something you’d like us to try out, use the comment form below to make a suggestion. Who knows, maybe we’ll do it….
